The Power of Belonging: Where My Heart Feels at Home

"Research continues to affirm what many of us know intuitively: belonging drives engagement, performance, and trust. It fuels collaboration, innovation, and wellbeing. A workplace where people feel valued, wanted, and seen is one where people stay, grow, and lead."

Have you ever walked into a room and felt invisible? That subtle sense that you are not truly seen?

Last week, I had an experience where I felt like I didn’t belong. I showed up authentically and ready to connect, but instead, I felt overlooked. It happened during an interview for an organization I truly admire and like. I was excited and hopeful, ready to share who I am. The interaction lacked depth and curiosity. I felt they only cared about what I could produce, not who I am. And that told me everything I needed to know. That was not the place I wanted to be part of.

Belonging for me is not just about fitting in. It is the feeling that I am seen and valued for who I am. It is that grounding, heart-opening presence that allows me to not only feel safe, but expansive. When I am in spaces where I belong, I breathe deeper and give my attention freely. I see others more clearly and with more depth. I become more generous, more creative, more alive.

However, when I don’t feel like I belong, when I sense that I am being overlooked and unseen, I contract. Old wounds surface. I carry the pain of exclusion, and I am less able to offer my fullest self to others. In these moments, I am reminded just how much my past experiences of belonging (or lack thereof) shape my ability to show up in the present.

This emotional rhythm of expansion and contraction is not unique to me. It is human. And in the workplace, it determines whether people thrive or simply survive.

Research continues to affirm what many of us know intuitively: belonging drives engagement, performance, and trust. It fuels collaboration, innovation, and well-being. A workplace where people feel valued, wanted, and seen is one where people stay, grow, and lead.

Yet here is the complexity: while we all share a deep need to belong, how we experience inclusion is uniquely personal.

So how do leaders foster true belonging?

Here are a few research-backed practices:

  1. Lead with Curiosity and Care
Ask, listen, and hold space without judgment. Practice presence, not performance.
  2. Build Psychological Safety
Make it safe for people to speak up, take risks, and share feedback, especially when it’s hard.
  3. Model Inclusive Behaviors
Interrupt bias, address microaggressions, and celebrate difference. Show others what belonging looks like in action.
  4. Make Interviews Human-Centered
During hiring, focus on the whole person, not just what they can produce. Ask questions that reflect curiosity about the candidate’s values, perspectives, and lived experience. Inclusion begins before someone is hired.
  5. Invest in Inclusive Leadership Development
Programs like Beyond Inclusion Group’s Inclusive Leader Coaching Intensive equip leaders to lead inclusively and create cultures of belonging.
  6. Co-create Culture, Don’t Dictate It
Invite diverse voices into the design of policies, values, and practices. People support what they help create.
